Fitting the Watercooling and Hard Drives
Internally, I wanted to continue the smooth glossy black panelling as a nice contrast to the ribbed and armoured exterior. I mounted two Western Digital Raptors vertically into the drive cage, using this mount to effectively act as a solid partition to hide the pump, USB video card, and a ton of wiring from view.
Then I had
Moddersmart laser cut me a top and bottom panel to help hide the rest of the unsightly cabling and such. The top panel has the BSG logo cut out for the power supply fan, and the bottom has an abstract schematic of the Galactica cut as a grill, with silhouettes of other ships in the rag-tag fleet around it.
The two red 120mm fans over the radiator really contribute well to the internal red and black theme. Lastly, a third glossy black panel next to the motherboard finishes off the interior and adds a mirrored effect for the hardware inside.
For cooling, I went with Swiftech blocks and pump, clear PC Ice coolant through red Primoflex tubing, and Black Ice Stealth 360 radiator.
Case Base
Since I was mounting the Black Ice 360 Stealth radiator underneath the case, its base needed to be extended upwards to allow for proper airflow as the radiator is 1” thick - the same as the base’s height. I searched far and wide but I couldn’t find any case feet or wheels that would do the case justice. It simply didn’t look right.
In the end I decided to keep the existing base and extend it by adding 1” of aluminium box tubing. I designed and cut the pieces in such as way that they continue the angled lines of the base as it was important to make it continue looking uniform, then I utilised the existing threaded holes to fasten them down.
I then skinned the base with a sheet of styrene, and added armour panels to match the rest of the case. Special pieces were made from aluminium at angles to blend the extensions into the front, then the styrene armour was curved over them. At first glance, one would never even know the base has been extended - it was exactly the look I was going for.
